FileSpin for Figma: Help and Support

How to use the FileSpin plugin in Figma, FigJam and Figma Slides to add images and videos from FileSpin to your designs and save designs back, plus fixes for common problems and how to contact support.

The FileSpin plugin connects your FileSpin library to Figma. Browse and search your assets and collections, add images and videos to a design, and save frames and layers back to FileSpin, without downloading and uploading files by hand.

It works in Figma Design, FigJam and Figma Slides, in the desktop app and in the browser.

Get started

You need a FileSpin account. If you don't have one, select Create one on the plugin's sign-in screen.

  1. In Figma, open Plugins (or Actions → Plugins & widgets), search for FileSpin, and run it.
  2. Select Sign in with FileSpin. A FileSpin page opens in your browser.
  3. Sign in to FileSpin if asked. Check the page shows the same code as the plugin, then select Allow.
  4. Go back to Figma. The panel updates by itself and shows your assets.

You stay signed in on this computer until you sign out. To sign out, select the ⋯ button at the top of the panel, then Sign out.

Add images and videos

  • Assets lists the images and videos in your library. Select an image to add it to your design, or drag it onto the canvas.
  • Search finds assets by name. Use * as a wildcard, for example banner*.
  • Filters narrow the list by file type, upload date and metadata schema. The sort menu orders it by newest, oldest, name or size.
  • Collections lists your FileSpin collections. Open one to add its images and videos.

Where the asset goes:

  • If you selected a shape or frame, the image fills it.
  • Otherwise it lands in the middle of your view as a new layer. Add several in a row and they are placed side by side.
  • In Figma Slides, it goes into the current slide.

SVG files come in as editable vectors. HEIC and WebP images are converted to a type Figma accepts. Images larger than 4096 pixels on a side are scaled down to fit, which is Figma's limit.

Asset details

Select the eye button on a thumbnail to see an asset up close:

  • a bigger preview (a video plays),
  • its type, size and upload date,
  • its formats (for an image: the original and the copies FileSpin made of it) or its versions (for a video: the original and its smaller copies),
  • its metadata.

Pick a format or version, then select Add to Figma. Select the download button next to any of them to save that file through your browser.

Videos

Selecting a video opens its details, so you can choose a version. A smaller one loads faster and plays the same in a design.

Figma plays videos only in files of paid Figma teams. In a free team, Figma refuses the video.

Save to FileSpin

Select the frames or layers to save, then select Save to FileSpin at the bottom of the panel. You can also right-click and choose Plugins → FileSpin → Save selection to FileSpin.

OptionWhat it does
New assetAdds the design to your library as a new file. Name it in File name, and optionally add it to a collection.
Update an asset's fileThe design becomes the file of an existing asset. The asset keeps its name, links and metadata. If version history is on in FileSpin, the old file is kept as a previous version, and the update may wait for approval.
Conversion of an assetAdds the design next to an existing asset, for example as its banner size. The original stays as it is.

For an update or a conversion, the panel suggests the asset the layer came from. Select it to choose another.

Formats: PNG, JPG, SVG and PDF, at 1x, 2x or 3x. A frame with video or animation can also be saved as MP4 or GIF.

Metadata

Select Add metadata (for a new asset) or Edit metadata (for an existing one) to fill in the asset's fields. The fields come from your account's metadata schemas, and you can switch to another schema. Fields marked * must be filled in. Changing the schema keeps only the fields both schemas have.

To save designs, your FileSpin role must allow you to add assets. To update a file, add a conversion or edit metadata, you must be able to edit that asset.

Your data

  • The plugin signs in with FileSpin's own sign-in page. It never sees your password.
  • Your sign-in is kept in Figma's plugin storage on your computer, and removed when you sign out.
  • Layers the plugin adds or saves remember the FileSpin asset's ID and name inside the Figma file, so the panel can suggest that asset when you save again.
  • Files go only between Figma and your FileSpin account (app.filespin.io, cdn.filespin.io and upload.filespin.io). A design is uploaded only when you select Save.

Contact support

Email support@filespin.io. To help us answer quickly, include:

  • the email address you use to sign in to FileSpin,
  • what you were doing and the message you saw,
  • the asset's name, if the problem is with one asset.

We never ask for your password.
